Hed Kandi is a UK-based record label and a music brand, established 1999, specialising in house music. Founded by DJ and A&R man, Mark Doyle, Hed Kandi's catalogue includes both artist albums and various genres of club compilations.

The brand has grown in strength through the years, culminating in the purchase of the record label at the end of January 2006 by the Ministry Of Sound, one of the largest dance music brands. Hed Kandi, along with the Enterprise Records division of Smooth FM was purchased for an undisclosed sum from Guardian Media Group Radio Holdings.

Hed Kandi also holds nightclub events around the United Kingdom and worldwide, most notably summer residencies in Ibiza. There are also a monthly residencies in London nightclub Pacha, Bournemouth University's Student Union, The Old Firestation and New York's Crobar.

On March 31 of 2007, the world's first bar bearing the name Hed Kandi was opened in Hurghada, Egypt, on the Red Sea. Hed Kandi Beach Bar is designed according to the well-known Hed Kandi style. The sentence Red Sea is the new White Island is written on a wall near the open-air dancefloor. Similar to the music releases, the club has a unique "release number", which is painted on the wall, namely HKV001.

The Ministry Of Sound plans on maintaining the current style of Hed Kandi, whilst Mark Doyle has now established a new house music label called Fierce Angels.

I was never a fan of Hed Kandi's music. I find the music unexciting. I admire though the business aspect, marketing and branding of Hed Kandi. It was just fitting that Ministry bought the brand. I'm sure Mark Doyle is a happy and wealthy man.

I like the production of the songs being included in the compilations, but I was never a fan of it. :)

marketing and branding? so that means alot of money right? do you think those 3 names under one brain are blinding the philippine "market"? "market" = our scene that is much respectfully slowly progressing? ;) hmmm...

Ministry, Fierce Angle, Hed Kandi, they are made for the mass consumer market, the same way McDonald's and other fast food joints are made for that same mass market. Now, with that analogy, let me reply to your question with another question: Is McDonald's (and other fast food joints) bad for the food industry?

hahahaha ;=) I agree with you. Thats why as DJs, promoters and club owners, we should always give the market choices. For a long time it was all the same, but things are changing for the better now: Local//e!! playing almost every week, Rewired bringing back the underground sound, "Happy Mondays" at Embassy Cuisine.

Going back to what I was saying about branding and marketing, Check out my two favorite labels: Get Physical Music (www.physical-music.com) and Kompakt (www.myspace.com/kompakt). They are very good at branding and marketing but they target the very discriminating people.

my answer is not analytic but i guess the most practical ;) i really appreciate DJs, promoters, club, bar owners who put some little twist on their weekly/regular nights ;) well-said enough - I HAVE TO END THIS TOPIC ;) the topic might go mainstream...and WE don't like that! ;)
lol! ;)

CHEERS TO EVERYONE! ;)

i liked hed kandi in its early stages, when it was sort of in an indie scene, but right now, the market being flooded with house and all those kinds of house, kinda gets boring, innit?

Europe is home to some of the world's best DJ/duos/groups right now, like Erol Alkan, Simian Mobile Disco, LCD Soundsystem, Justice and Digitalism. i wonder who will bring em here...

oh, i really dont care if it is technically mainstream or underground, but typically, underground is usually fresh and new, and we all like something fresh and new, yeah? :)

There's an effort to bring back the underground here in Manila. I love all the artists you mentioned and many of our DJs play tracks from them. We are exploring the feasibility of bringing some of those artists here, its not easy. By the way Ginnoboy, LCD Soundsystem is not from Europe, they are from NewYork, USA.

oh i stand corrected. have only seen em play in Europe hehehe
